Summer
Reading Guidelines
Ice Cream
Social – Summer Reading Kickoff! – Tuesday,
June 22 at
3 PM
Come make your own yummy sundaes, socialize with
friends, and enjoy fun activities, including: face painting, paper
airplane making, sidewalk chalk art, and bubble blowing.
Volunteers needed to help with activities – please sign up to
volunteer in the Children’s Room.
In honor of this summer’s theme of “Go Green At
Your Library,” Ice Cream Social attendees are encouraged to bring their
own non-disposable bowls, cups, & spoons. As in the past, the library
will also still provide disposable bowls, cups & spoons.
Please, PLEASE pre-register
for the Ice Cream Social (preferably at least a week ahead), both so we
can provide enough sweet treats for all, and also so that we can notify
you if we need to use a rain date.

Flea
Circus – All Ages: Wednesday, June 30 from

Ed
Popielarczyk makes a return visit to the library with his famous Flea
Circus. What is a Flea Circus?
It is an entire big top circus in miniature!
First we have Fifi, who performs on the high wire and the trapeze!
Then there is Bruno, the world’s strongest flea who turns over a
coin in a child’s hand! Last
but not least is Fernando who does the high dive into a pool of water and
gets shot out of a cannon and into a volunteer's hands!! The audience will
be thrilled and amazed at these and other incredible demonstrations
starring Ed’s trained fleas. Please

Peter and
Ellen Allard Family Concert – Ages 2 to 8:

With a guitar, a bundle of energy, and a vast
repertoire of irresistible songs and chants, award-winning national
recording artists Peter & Ellen Allard will present a concert for
young children. This Massachusetts-based couple has captured the hearts
and smiles of young children and adults at schools, libraries, festivals,
and conferences across the country. Peter
& Ellen have released seven recordings, three song books, and have won
numerous awards, including two Parents’ Choice, a Parent’s Guide, and
six Children’s Music Web Awards. Please

Yo-Yo
People – All Ages: Tuesday, July 13 from

Who would have thought you could make an entire show
out of yo-yos? This husband and wife duo bring back that nostalgic toy,
reminding you of old favorite tricks such as Walk the Dog and Rock the Baby,
then amazing you with new and bizarre tricks, such as Boingy-Boingy
and Iron Whip. Yo-yos attached to bouncy balls, yo-yos with 10-foot
strings, and multiple yo-yos looping while hula hooping and unicycling are
just some of their finely tuned feats. High skill and deft timing to
swingin' music coupled with high energy and sarcastic humor make the Yo-Yo
People a favorite for every age. As
seen on David Letterman, they hold a Guinness World Record, a 2008 Yo-Yo
World Champion title, and have performed in 18 different countries.

this program will take place outdoors to a crowd of unlimited size.
BUT, in
the case of rain, seating will be indoors
& limited, and pre-registration
will be required for admission.

Class Frisbee Show & Playshop – All Ages:

2-time World Freestyle Champion Todd Brodeur.
Experience the fun and excitement of this simple yet space-age
object. Frisbees have been part of American pop culture for over 50 years;
across the globe, the popularity of Frisbee has never been greater. Now
you can watch a master of the craft and learn a few tricks yourself. Todd
will demonstrate simple tricks and catches, then show more difficult moves
and combinations. A collection of various types of different Frisbees will
be shown, along with stories and messages that will be shared. He then
will teach the class many tricks and catches that everyone can try.
* Weather permitting, this program will take place outdoors.
In
case of rain, the program will be rescheduled
to a future date (to be announced).

Tie
Dye Bonanza! – All Ages: Tuesday, July 27 from

4:00 PM
Bring
your own t-shirt to decorate, and rubber gloves (to protect your hands
from the dye), and join the tie dying fun!

Night Sky
– Ages 7 and up: Tuesday, August 3: 4 half-hour sessions, starting at:

Starlab, an inflatable indoor planetarium from the
Museum
of
Science
, will be coming
to the library! Come find out
“what’s up” in the night sky. We
will find several constellations in the sky, learn what’s really special
about the North Star, locate objects like planets and galaxies, and see
up-to-date images from probes and telescopes.
Only 25 people may attend each presentation.
Please pre-register for only one
presentation. All children
aged 7 & 8 must be
accompanied by an adult.
Native
Animals – Grades 1 and up: Wednesday,
August 11 ~ 2 half-hour sessions, starting at:

Meet animals native to
Massachusetts
and
New England
up close.
The Audubon Ark Outreach program will be bringing two animals, a
Woodchuck and a Canada Goose, to the library for this presentation.
Since these are live animals, enrollment in each half-hour session
is strictly limited to 30 child participants (accompanying adults may also
attend). Please sign up for
only one session. * This
program is co-sponsored by the Harvard Conservation Trust and the Friends
of the HPL.
Summer
Reading Finale Picnic – All Ages: Wednesday,
