HARVARD PUBLIC LIBRARYCODE OF CONDUCT
Objective: To maintain an environment that promotes
enjoyment of the library’s resources and services, as well as to protect the
safety of all patrons, staff, and materials.
The following topics are presented as guidelines.
Final determination of safety, security, and appropriate behavior will be
determined by the library staff. q
Proper and appropriate use of physical facility, equipment and
furniture is required. The staff and
Director will determine appropriate use. q
Talking and noise must be appropriate for a library environment.
Devices (such as but not limited to iPods, mp3 players, etc) are permitted as
long as they do not disrupt the use of the library by other patrons. Disruptive
behavior includes throwing items, running, loud noise or inappropriate behavior
towards other library users or library staff. q
Use of skateboards, roller blades or similar items is not
permitted on the property during hours the library is open to the public. q
No soliciting is permitted at any time on the grounds of the
library or inside the building. q
Misuse of elevators, stairways, and automatic doors is prohibited. q
Congregating in disruptive groups will result in removal from the
library regardless of day, time or weather. q
Cell phone usage is not permitted in the library. q
No gambling in any form is permitted. q
Food and liquids are not permitted in the library. Water in closed
bottles is only permitted in the Upper Lobby.

The use of alcohol, controlled substances or tobacco is not
permitted in or on library property. q
Animals, except for guide or assist animals are not permitted. q
Staff warnings and requests are to be followed immediately when
given. q
Appropriate dress (shoes/shirts) is required. q
Backpacks are to be kept near the owner, or placed in the entry
(staff is not responsible for lost or stolen items). q
Bathrooms are for use by patrons and are to be kept clean and
orderly. q
Use of profanity and/or abusive behavior will result in immediate
expulsion from the library. q
Appropriate Internet usage is expected as described in the
library’s Internet Policy. Any purposeful damage to materials, equipment, furniture,
building or property of the library is against the law and will be dealt with
appropriately.
