Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities for Harvard students:

Saturday Storytime Volunteers

Enjoy reading stories to children?  The library runs a Saturday Storytime where teens read to children ages 4 to 7 and their parents.  Storytime volunteers usually work in groups of two or three.

Requirements:

Harvard resident or Bromfield student in grades 7 to 12.  Must be able to volunteer rotating Saturdays from 10:45AM to 12:00 noon .  Schedule will be based on the availability of all of the students.  Must meet with children’s librarian for one planning session on a weekday for each scheduled Saturday.

Game Hour Supervisors

Like to play games? The library runs a drop-in game hour on Thursday afternoons from 4 to 5 PM . Teach and facilitate games such as chess, Othello, Set, Blokus, Slamwich, etc. with younger students.

Requirements:

Harvard resident or Bromfield student in grades 9 to 12.  Commitment to volunteer on a regularly scheduled, rotating basis.  Reliability is essential.  Ability to create a happy, controlled atmosphere for the younger students who attend.

Movie Night Volunteers

The library runs a Family Movie Night once a month on Fridays through the school year, and more frequently during the summer reading program (Thursday nights in the summer).  Volunteers are needed to help with snack preparation and distribution, greeting arrivals at the library’s front door, and clean-up after the movie ends.

Requirements:

Harvard resident or Bromfield student in grades 6 to 12.  Must be able to arrive forty-five minutes prior to the start of the movie (for set-up) and must be able to stay for at least fifteen minutes after the conclusion of the movie (for clean-up).  Reliability is essential.

Teen Advisory Board

Get involved in what’s happening at the library!  Participate and share ideas for books, magazines, DVDs, music CDs, and future programs and activities.  Lisa Gagnon, reference librarian, is the contact for the Teen Advisory Board.

Requirements:

Harvard resident or Bromfield student in grades 7 to 12.  Commitment to attend approximately one meeting per month, usually on Tuesdays in the late afternoon/evening.

Volunteers for Special Programs

The library runs many special programs throughout the year which require a lot of volunteer assistance.  These programs include the Lego Expo, the Ice Cream Social, the Summer Reading Finale Picnic, and the Tie Dye Extravaganza.  This is a great opportunity to volunteer at the library only once or twice a year, as opposed to committing to a regular program.

Requirements:

Harvard resident or Bromfield student in grades 6 to 12.

Senior Projects

If you would like to do your Bromfield Senior Project through the library, please meet with Lisa Gagnon or Abby Kingsbury to determine feasibility and map out a plan for the project.
