Searching the Harvard Public Library Catalog

The Harvard Public Library is an online resource that provides access to the holdings of the Harvard Public, as well as the holdings of other libraries in the Central/Western Massachusetts Automated Resource Sharing (C/W MARS) network.  The Harvard Public Library catalog can be accessed at most workstations in the library.   It may also be accessed from our web site http://www.harvardpubliclibrary.org/ under the link “Search HPL Catalog”.

In addition to providing information about the Library’s books,  journals, CD-ROMS, music cds, Books-on-Tape and CD, DVDS and videocassettes, the online catalog also allows the user to request books from other libraries, renew books and view a reading history.

Getting Started

From the Library’s webpage http://www.harvardpubliclibrary.org/ click on the link “Search HPL Catalog."

Searching

Searching by KEYWORD (default search)

This search will look for your keyword(s) in the title, subject, organization and note fields.  Type a word or phrase, or combine words with and, or, near, or and not, then click Submit button.

            Example: turtles

Example: asthma and children

*Click Help for additional search tips

Truncation

When searching, in order to find all words with the same root, use double asterisks as a truncator.

Example: school** finds school, schools, schoolbook, etc.

Limiting your search

You can modify your search, or narrow down the search.  Click on (Modify Search)and narrow your search to videocassettes, periodicals, etc. or to one particular library.

Searching by AUTHOR

Type the name of an author, composer, or performer with the last name first, then click Submit button.

Example:  gates, bill
Example:  shakespeare

Type the name of a corporation, organization, or performing group in direct order.

Example:  general electric

You can still search by Author even if you are not entirely sure how to spell her or his name. Entering the first few letters of the author's last name will usually bring up a list of names; hopefully the author you need is in the list. If you still can't find your author, try searching by Title or Keyword or consult with one of our librarians.

Searching by TITLE

Type as much as you know of the title of the book, video, audiocassette, etc.  Begin with the first word.  When finished, click Submit.

Example:  the green mile
Example:  for whom the bell tolls

*If you don't know the first word of a title, use a KEYWORD search instead

Searching by AUTHOR/TITLE

Type the author or artist's name (last name first) then enter words from the title, contents or summary notes.  Finally, click Submit.

Journal Title Search

Use this search to see if the library subscribes to a particular journal or magazine.  Type as much as you know of the title.  Please note that a journal title search does not find individual articles.  You would use one of Harvard Public Library's periodical databases to find articles.

Example:  new england journal of medicine
